Since October 2023, residents have been able to use the LieferMichel system to have food and other everyday items delivered by drone – however, the maximum weight is limited to four kilograms.
The Bären-Apotheke pharmacy in Erbach has joined the LieferMichel network. The owner sees great advantages for his customers:
“Especially in rural areas, long distances often present a challenge for sick people to quickly get the medication they need. That's why we're excited to gain our first experiences with drone-based deliveries as part of the LieferMichel project.”
The Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport (BMDV) is funding the project with a total of €430,000. Originally, the funding was only approved until the end of 2023, but the pilot project has now been extended until March 2024.
Test trials show great potential
The delivery of medicines by drone has also been tested in other regions of Germany. In Saxony-Anhalt, successful individual trials took place as early as July 2023. These tested how autonomously flying drones can operate in residential areas and what influence factors such as trees and wind have on their flight.
