Agricultural robot BERRY autonomously picks strawberries

Automation has long since made its way into agriculture. Autonomous vehicles and drones are on the move in the fields, and innovative systems are also being used in greenhouses. When it comes to strawberry harvesting, the image of hardworking seasonal workers immediately comes to mind, but BERRY will change that in the future.

Berry, the new robot from Organifarms, was presented for the first time in June 2022. Created as a special solution for the demanding harvesting of ripe strawberries from greenhouses, the nimble picker acts completely autonomously. The operator can define exactly the degree of ripeness of the fruit at which BERRY is to become active; scanning, evaluating and just separating it from the plant with all due care is done by the robot very reliably and independently.

On a daily average, only about 7 seconds are required per berry, including two loading processes, row changes and loading runs of the system as soon as the maximum loading quantity is reached. In the process, BERRY fills 8 crates each with the typical sales trays and prepares them for removal.

In times of dwindling human resources and increasing food demand, robotic systems like Berry are a working solution and support ecological and sustainable agriculture. The start-up's product hit exactly the nerve of their customers and was able to find recognition, funding and most importantly, users in a very short time. We keep our fingers crossed for the Organifarms team. This is innovation from Germany!
