Elon Musk announced in an interview with Fox News host Tucker Carlson that he is working on his own artificial intelligence and chatbot application called "TruthGPT" to challenge OpenAI ChatGPT. The billionaire again voiced his concerns about the dangers of AI, pointing to his views that existing AI tools are politically biased.
In the interview, Musk said he will launch "something I call TruthGPT, or an "absolute truth-seeking AI" (Maximum Truth-Seeking AI) that seeks to understand the nature of the universe." Musk believes his approach is the best way to ensure safety, as he believes an "AI that cares about understanding the universe is unlikely to destroy humanity."
Musk also spoke about his role as co-founder of ChatGPT creator OpenAI, explaining that he wanted to build it as an open-source counter to Google's AI efforts. However, the billionaire lamented the current state of OpenAI, criticizing its closed-source nature and claiming that Microsoft has a "very strong opinion" if not direct control over the company.
Musk acknowledged that his "third option" to Google's and Microsoft's OpenAIs platforms was late, but he hoped it could be implemented. The billionaire then reiterated his concerns about OpenAI, claiming that its tools are "trained to be politically correct, which is another way of saying disingenuous things."
It is unclear whether Musk has already recruited anyone to work on his AI tool, whether it will actually be called "TruthGPT" or whether this is merely a placeholder. However, Musk had previously founded a new company called X.AI Corp to focus on artificial intelligence. The company's name reflects Musk's plan to create a so-called "all in one app" called X. Reports suggest Musk is serious about creating a competitor to OpenAI. He has also reportedly approached AI researcher Igor Babushkin to collaborate on the project.
