ChatGPT is an AI chatbot software that understands human text input and naturally responds to it. Anyone can have a dialogue with this artificial intelligence.

What is ChatGPT ?

GPT stands for Generative Pre-Trained Transformer and is an AI chatbot system. You can simply ask ChatGPT what it is yourself, in which you ask, for example, "What are you?"

The bot is significantly smarter than the automated customer support chats that are now everywhere. That's because it's not limited to a few answer options that quickly make the conversation boring. The AI also answers queries, admits mistakes, rejects requests, corrects grammar, simplifies difficult texts, and can even fix bugs in program codes.

Set up account

ChatGPT is offered on the website of OpenAI - which is the company that developed ChatGPT. First you have to create an account. Under "Sign Up" an e-mail address and a cell phone number are required and a captcha may have to be solved.

The e-mail address noreply@tm.openai.com sends a verification link, which leads to the next step - the selection of a user name. After that, only the terms of use on the OpenAI website have to be accepted and a verification by means of a confirmation code via the previously provided cell phone number has to be performed.

Chat with ChatGPT

As soon as an input is sent to the AI in the form of text, the response follows after a short delay. The input can be arbitrary: a question, a request or simply any text. The more accurate the input, the more accurate the output. The chat learns and adapts to a conversation. Therefore, mistakes can be corrected and input can be refined.

The data basis

The chatbot is based on OpenAI's GPT-3.5 language model. The language model uses deep learning technology and is trained with algorithms fed with huge amounts of text from the internet.

However, we as users do not know what the program knows and this is thus also the AI's greatest weakness. If you ask the AI about a topic it doesn't know, you can't judge how good or bad the answer is.

Possible applications

The technology is able to provide descriptions, answers and solutions to complex questions and supports the writing of, as well as the solution of optimization problems. Thus it represents an interesting extension for search engines like Google. Because it is a difference whether the user compiles information about a search engine himself or gets compactly explained by an artificial intelligence.

Programs based on such technologies could make most professions with customer contact redundant. In the future, texts or website content could be largely written by machines, and medical diagnoses or loan applications could be made in conversation with a chatbot.

Can humans be replaced ?

The technology is in beta stage. It is therefore to be improved and further developed. Currently, ChatGPT lacks the ability to think critically. The chatbot cannot make ethically justifiable decisions.
